About
Hello! My name is Brian Simpson and I am an aficionado of many things; namely, technology and music. I’m currently attending Wichita State for a double major in Music Education and Electrical Engineering.
To begin, interests in computers in general began at a young age where
I first learned to create websites using GUI-driven design systems on Homestead. They began to charge for their service, so being a cheap person myself, I switched over to Geocities along with my brother and cousin who were just as interested in web page design. Soon after, I began to learn the basics of HTML through trial and error, books, and the internet. A year or two later, game design also started with GUI tools such as The Games Factory and Multimedia Fusion by Clickteam. Without having much to show for this, I moved on to C++ when I was 12-13 years old creating text-based console games.
Around this time, I also began to compose music. I’ve played trumpet in band since the 5th grade and I messed
around with the piano a little bit as well. Most of my compositions were crap, but despite that, I was composing several songs per month always experimenting with new ideas. When I was 13, I began to learn the bass when the jazz band for our school began in the winter. I didn’t really want to play trumpet, but I always wanted to play bass, so my mom was generous and bought me a cheap bass to begin. Essentially learning by playing in the jazz band and taking lessons, I soon became familiar on how to play the bass. This eventually accelerated my interests leading me to my choice in a future career. After bass came guitar, then accordion, and several other instruments that I learned to play. Today, my interest is still growing strong through college courses, recording, composing, and playing in several groups and ensembles. However, I digress back to programming.
After creating crap text-based console games for awhile, I soon picked up a book that actually featured graphical creations.
With lots of excitement I dove in, learning lots about C and a great API that I still use called Allegro. I created several games and tests as I began to learn C. Keeping the ball rolling, I delved into game modifications, primarily Counter-Strike and a popular server plugin at the time, AMXMod. It used a form of C called SmallC (Now PAWN) where you could develop your own plugins for use in AMXMod whether is was setting players on fire or creating a whole new game mode within Counter-Strike. Due to school activities, work, and several other things dominating my time, I found little time for any sort of coding, programming, or scripting outside of small projects; however, I met several great people and created several plugins before eventually ceasing to code with AMXMod.
Today, my major interests are still computers and music, although to anyone who knows me, it’s evident that music takes up much more of my time. I love everything about music, conversing with people, learning new things, playing video games, and enjoying life in general. I’m also very lucky to be with my girlfriend, Alexandria Marie Peterson who absolutely means the world to me! Only time will tell where my life takes me from this point. Thanks for reading!
